Outdoors
Who
are we?
A
division of Anheddau Cyf we provide a range of outdoor activities
for adults with support needs.
What
is the current range of activities?
Provide a range of outdoor activities, currently including Mountain
and Coastal walking, Rock Climbing and Abseiling.
What
are the benefits?
All the activities are structured to develop self confidence,
self esteem and motor skills, as well as improving overall fitness
and health. Research has shown that moderate outdoor exercise
is most effective in treating mild to moderate depression, with
none of the side effects of medication, as well as providing
general health benefits from improved cardio-vascular functions.
Is
it for me?
Our experienced and qualified Leaders listen to the aims and
aspirations of each participant, guiding and supporting them
to achieve those goals. In many cases participants have found
that their achievements far exceed what they could have believed
possible.
Is
it safe?
The safety of our activities is paramount, and every possible
care is taken to reduce the objective dangers (always present
in the outdoors) to a minimum. Our Leaders are experienced in
working with clients with a variety of support needs and hold
the following qualifications.
- National
Governing Body Awards ( Mountain Leader Award, Single Pitch
Award and Mountain Instructor Award).
- Recognized
First Aid awards, covering particularly First Aid in remote
environments.
The venues
we use are fully risk assessed and all the equipment used is
of the highest standard . (Group/Individual shelter units, climbing
equipment, first aid kits, mobile phone, two way radio). We
use a minimum of two Leaders for every group. A comprehensive
Safety Policy is available if required. It is a tribute to the
skill and professionalism of our Leaders that no accident requiring
hospital treatment has occurred during the period of this scheme.
How
can I take part?
All clients need to complete our Referral Form (available on
request from the Co-ordinator), in order that we can fully exercise
our duty of care. We offer the first two sessions free of charge
as a taster, and after that there is a heavily subsidised fee
of £10 / session (payable by invoice). After the Referral Form
has been accepted you should book the session/s you wish to
attend by phoning our co-ordinator
When
are the sessions?
Every Wednesday excluding Public Holidays. The morning session
is Walking and you need to be at our Sackville Road, Bangor,
Centre between 10 and 10.15 am. The afternoon session is climbing,
normally starting about 2.00pm but times will be confirmed when
you book.
What
equipment do I need to bring?
You should bring a waterproof jacket and overtrousers, and suitable
walking boots if you have them. You should also bring a drink
and a packed lunch if attending for the whole day, together
with any medication you require. We have a small supply of waterproofs,
fleeces, boots and rucsacs for loan if required. All technical
equipment is provided.
What
if the weather is too bad to go out?
Should the weather be unsuitable for outdoor climbing we can
offer the choice of indoor climbing on our own indoor climbing
wall, or a walk, when we would identify a suitable venue having
regard to the weather conditions prevailing or forecast.
